New York Café Budapest: Is This Iconic Spot Worth the Hype?
If you’re planning a trip to Budapest, chances are you’ve come across the New York Café. Frequently referred to as the “most beautiful café in the world,” this historic treasure has earned its place as a must-visit destination for travelers. A quick scroll through Instagram reveals its immense popularity, with countless reels showcasing its stunning interiors and luxurious ambience.
My Opinion
But is it really worth your time and money? This is my honest opinion, based purely on my experience when I visited in October 2024.
When we booked our girls’ trip to Budapest to celebrate some of our group’s 40th birthdays, this was one of the first things I arranged. I had saved reels on my social media and added it to my bucket list, making it a must-do when planning our itinerary.
A Brief History of the New York Café
Located in the heart of Budapest, the New York Café dates back to 1894 and is a masterpiece of Italian Renaissance architecture. Once a favourite haunt of writers, poets, and artists during Hungary’s literary golden age, the café is steeped in history. Restored to its former glory in 2006, it now serves as part of the Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel.
Opening Times & Hours
The New York Café is typically open daily from 8:00 am-midnight, making it convenient for any meal. However, hours may vary based on the season or events, so it’s best to check their official website or contact the café before your visit.
Due to high demand, table reservations are only available for dinners after 6 pm. Some tables are kept open during this period, so if online reservations are full, it’s still worth dropping by.
From 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving early can help you secure a table and avoid long waits.
What to Expect at the New York Café
Stunning Interiors: There is no denying that the moment you step inside, you’ll be greeted by opulent chandeliers, intricate frescoes, and marble columns that ooze luxury. It’s like walking into a palace.
Cuisine: The New York Café offers a blend of traditional Hungarian dishes and international cuisine. While reviews on the food are mixed, the desserts and coffee often receive praise.
During my visit, I tried the spaghetti in pecorino cheese sauce with mushrooms. For dessert, my friend and I shared two options: the raspberry and pistachio tart, and the New York chocolate cake with Valrhona chocolate. The raspberry and pistachio tart was absolutely delicious and my favorite part of the meal.
The food overall was nice, but it wasn’t the best dining experience I’ve ever had. I’ve definitely enjoyed better meals elsewhere, especially considering the premium pricing here.
Service & Atmosphere: The New York Café is a hub for tourists, so it’s always bustling with energy. While this liveliness adds charm, it may detract from the serene ambiance some visitors expect. When we visited, it was busy, but we were seated downstairs in a quieter corner, which was a pleasant. The service was efficient, and our waiter was friendly and professional, leaving no room for complaints.
Is It Worth It?
Visiting the New York Café in Budapest is as much about the experience as it is about the food. Whether you choose to splurge or skip, the decision ultimately depends on your travel style and priorities.
I’m glad I experienced it and ticked it off my bucket list, but if I were to visit Budapest again, I wouldn’t feel the need to return.
